Drain CCTV Camera Inspection in SS0

Drain CCTV Camera Inspection in SS0

We completed a drain CCTV camera inspection in SS0 (Westcliff-on-Sea, Southend), sending a waterproof camera through the property’s drainage to see the pipe condition without digging anything up. A domestic survey usually takes one to two hours on site, and what you get at the end should be recorded footage and a written report, not a verbal “it looks fine.”

A CCTV drain survey feeds a small waterproof camera along the inside of the drain, usually from a gully, inspection chamber or rodding point, and records what it sees. It lets a plumber or drainage specialist identify the cause of a problem rather than guessing.

A camera can show:

It cannot show what is outside the pipe or the structure around it, and it can’t survey a drain that is full of water or blockage until that has been cleared.

A survey is not usually needed for a one-off blockage that clears easily and doesn’t return.

This is our process for a CCTV drain survey. The snapshot above shows how it applied on this job.

UK drainage survey practice is commonly based on the Water Research Centre’s standards and the BS EN 13508 condition-coding system. Ask any surveyor whether they follow it if you need a formal report, for example for a pre-purchase or insurance purpose.

Responsibility for a drain depends on where it runs:

A survey helps establish where a defect is, which then helps decide who is responsible for fixing it. If the defect is on a shared or lateral drain, contact the sewerage company rather than commissioning an expensive repair yourself.

SS0 covers Westcliff-on-Sea, where much of the housing is older, including Victorian and Edwardian villas and interwar semi-detached homes. Older properties commonly have clay pipes, which can develop displaced joints, cracks and root ingress over time, particularly where mature trees and shrubs sit close to the drain run. Extensions and conversions can also change drainage layouts without the plans being updated, which is another reason a survey is useful before building work.

UK price guides give a broad picture:

These are national guides rather than SS0 prices. The price rises with a longer or more complex drain, difficult access, cleaning needed first, a full written report or a drain plan, and urgency.

Book one if a drain blocks more than once, if you notice smells, damp or sinking near a drain run, if you’re buying an older property, or before building near drains. If sewage is backing up into the house, treat it as urgent and call a plumber now rather than waiting for a survey. See our drainage services

How long does a CCTV drain survey take? Typically one to two hours for a domestic property, longer for long or complex runs or when cleaning is needed first.

What does a drain survey report include? Footage, a written description of the drain’s condition and defects, their positions along the run and a recommended action.

Does a drain survey fix the problem? No. It diagnoses the problem. Cleaning and repair are separate work unless quoted together.

Do I need a drain survey when buying a house? It’s not compulsory, but it’s worth it for older properties, where defects may not show until later.

How much does a CCTV drain survey cost? UK guides suggest roughly £100 to £350 for most domestic surveys, with higher figures for pre-purchase reports with plans.

Will the survey show a collapsed drain? Often yes. If the camera can’t pass a point, the footage and report should record where and why.

Who pays if the defect is on a shared drain? Often the sewerage company, rather than the homeowner. Check before arranging a repair.

Tell us what you’re seeing, whether it’s a blockage, a smell, damp or a property purchase, and we’ll recommend whether a survey is the right first step and what it will include.
